The May People’s March

As a part of a public outreach program, a figure artist and several Gwangju-based artists, along with participants of all ages from the public, created larger-than-life figures of those who were sacrificed in the May 18 People’s Uprising. These figures will march along Geumnam-ro on May 16th, 2020.

Due to COVID19, the originally planned large-scale march has been cancelled. Instead, a smaller march will be held by those who participated in the making of these figures.

Practice March

  • The bodies of these figurines will be made and dressed, and the necessary structures will be added to the inside such that a person can wear the figure.
  • We will decide on who will wear the figure and practice marching.

Storytelling and Performance

  • The march will tell a story, and it will incorporate performances from professional theatrical companies and pungmul, a Korean folk music tradition that includes drumming, dancing, and singing.

Information

  • The figures, those who participated in making these figures, and other members of the public will march through the street on May 16th, 2020 (Sat).
  • The march begins at 2PM.
  • The route for the march is: Start in front of the Sangmugwan -> Jeonnam Girl’s High School -> front of the Wongagsa -> 5.18 Democracy Square
