광주 희생자들은 용감하게 민주의를 옹호하며 일어섰고, 대한민국을 민주국가로 만들기 위해 시민으로서의 역할을 다했다. 이 전시회는 그 해 5월에 일어난 사건들을 각자의 시각으로 지켜본 목격자들의 진심 어린 이야기를 보여준다. 

수많은 사람들의 노고와 분투, 금남로를 가득 메운 인파, 헌혈자의 긴 행렬, 이름 모를 자원봉사자들이 나눠준 주먹밥 등이 고스란히 드러난 문서에 나타난 연대와 배려를 보여주고 싶었다. 5·18 광주민주화운동을 모르는 사람은 거의 없지만, 진짜 무슨 일이 일어났는지 아는 사람은 많지 않다. 우리는 이 전시회가 사람들에게 운동의 중요성을 곰곰이 생각해 볼 수 있는 계기가 되기를 바란다. The May 18 Democratic Movement Archives was established on May 13, 2015, at the former Gwangju Catholic Center to systematically preserve and manage 5.18 records, which are UNESCO World Records Heritage Sites.
